A recent commission for Ginninderry to share books and build community. Based on the humble wooden boxes shaped like houses founded by Todd Bol of Little Free Library, I’ve enhanced the community book library functionality to include mobility and a rooftop garden for planting herbs and flowers.
The design is based on mid-century modern principles with a minimal geometric shape, contrasting materials and bold colour. A used vintage cabinet led the design, and thick steel was used to support the library and provide protection from the elements. The front of the timber cupboard was removed and replaced with safety glass. Heavy-duty lockable castor wheels were added, the library was painted a bold yellow to complement and enhance the timber, and a brass tap was added to drain excess water in the soil.
The book library is already well-loved and filled with books for Gininderry residents and made the street a space to swap and share stories. Healthy, happy plants spill over the sides of the rooftop garden. Because the three sides are steel, there is untapped potential for all things magnetic with community notices, news, refrigerator magnets, and creativity can adore the community library. Thanks to Cathy Hope, Selina Hardwicke and Tulitha King for the placemaking opportunity and Tulitha King for the images.
Go out to Ginindrry and swap some books!
